To say that my Werewolves Across America tour is off to a successful start is a bit of an understatement. I am writing this newsletter from the lobby of the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. It’s my sixth tour stop (out of over twenty currently scheduled). I started the tour with almost 300 books. I currently have a little over thirty left. Oops.
I have more books coming - don’t worry! - but in the meantime, I am selling what I do have, letting people pre-order copies as I run out and, most importantly, relishing in my opportunity to just be on the road. Writing WHERE WOLF was very much a solitary activity. I grew so used to the sound of my own inner voice that when I would open my mouth to say something my actual voice would catch me by surprise. Even after the script was done and I was able to team up with a pair of incredible collaborators - illustrator Debora Lancianese and letterer Jack Morelli - making WHERE WOLF was primarily an inner experience. The joy, the stress, the sense of accomplishment - it was all there but, except for the opportunities I had to celebrate with friends, these moments all lived within my head.
Being out on the road, meeting folks who either read WHERE WOLF as it ran as a webcomic or are excited to read it for the first time as a physical novel - this is anything but an inner experience. It has been such a joy talking with people about their favorite werewolf movies, about comic books, about their own passions and pursuits. I have met furries and horror hounds and even sold three comic books to a nice older woman who was extremely excited to send her adult sons copies of a comic book set in their home town (College Station).
I love the Werewolves Across America tour and I am soaking in every moment of it that I can, hoping that it refuels me as I roll up my sleeves and continue to work on the sequel.
This dispatch is a short one because I’m on the road but I just wanted to take a moment to thank everybody who has come out to a tour stop so far or plans to come out to a tour stop in the near future. Thank you for supporting me, for supporting WHERE WOLF and for allowing me to have some of the greatest six nights I’ve experienced in a long, long time.
Arrooooo!
